Beka Lamb
A fourteen-year-old girl who lives in 1950's Belize. She is dismayed following the death of her best friend. When she gets sent to school, she fails, but not because she's bad at school—she just hasn't been shown the value in her education, and she has serious issues in her personal life that make it hard for her to focus on tasks. Her parents misunderstand her.
Toycie
Toycie is Beka's best friend whose death comes along with mysterious deaths in the political sphere. Toycie was poor, and she ended up pregnant. Although Beka and Toycie were friends throughout their lives, this novel actually takes place after Toycie's death, as Beka integrates what she learned from Toycie's life. Toycie's death was caused by miscarriage in an asylum called 'Sea Breeze Hotel'. Her death caused Beka to a drastic change of mindset and to never fall in love with boys.

Beka's mom Ms. Lilla and dad Mr. Bill affords a private education for her at a Catholic school, and like Toycie's family, but that doesn't mean they'rich. Both parents work very hard to afford her school, so when Beka fails out, they are extremely upset . Especially when she lied to them and tells them that she passed. They tried to teach Beka, but Beka is suffering intensely—in a moment of desperation, their daughter steals their money.
Emilio Sanchez Villanueva
Emilio is Toycies boyfriend whom she met when she went to take music lesson from Emilio's mom. Emilio was orginally from St. Ambergis Caye until he was 14 years old. He then went to live in St. George's Caye with hs family. He loves the sea, and is well liked in his community because of ability of diving under water and getting the best conch. He is also the one who got Toycie pregnanat and ran away after doing so.
Ms. Eila
Ms. Eila is Toycie's maternal aunt, who looks after her after being abondoned by her biological mother. She works very hard in order to send toycie to school.
