Women's rights
Ginsburg uses this book to comment on the gender discrimination faced in the US during the course of her lifetime. For example, in United States v. Virginia (1996), which saw female students excluded from joining the Virginia Military Institute, Ginsburg argued for the right for women to have a military career and was successful.
Love
Though a secondary theme to the book, it is endearing to see the displays of affection between Ginsburg and her husband throughout her life. He is shown to be a feminist and highly supportive of all her endeavors to ensuring women get equal rights.
Societal convention
Ginsburg was ahead of her time as a female, having gone against the grain of her traditional American-Jewish family and pursued a career in law. She was driven by the fact that it was unfair to presume she was incapable of being any mother than a wife or mother, and set out to prove society wrong through her actions in the court room.
