Becoming Nicole

Becoming Nicole Analysis

Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family is a biography written by Amy Ellis Nutt and is based around the life experience of Nicole Amber Maines, a transgender rights activist. The book was published by Random House on 20 October 2015.

The biography begins by introducing the Maine’s family, who adopted two identical boys, one of whom goes on to become Nicole Maines, the well-known transgender activist. Biologically born as a male, Wyatt Maines, Nicole always knew she was meant to be a female by the time she was three years old. She was key to the Doe v. Clenchy (2013) ruling that concluded schools violated the Human Rights Act by prohibiting transgender students to access bathrooms consistent with their gender identity.

This book was extremely well received, with Publishers Weekly commenting “This poignant account of a transgender girls transition offers a heartfelt snapshot of a family whose only objective is to protect their daughter.” The New York Times also stated “If you aren’t moved by Becoming Nicole, I’d suggest there’s a lump of dark matter where your heart should be.”
