Shuya Nanahara
Shuya is the protagonist of Battle Royale. He is a loyal, upstanding student who is trusting and justice-motivated, hesitant to kill others and wishing to cooperate instead. He loves rock music. During the movie, he develops a close alliance with fellow student Noriko.
Noriko Nakagawa
Noriko is the female protagonist of Battle Royale. She is a kind, somewhat quiet and reserved character, but also stalwart in her beliefs of justice and not hurting others. She can be very innocent, but also inspirational. Shuya's best friend had a crush on her, and Shuya vows to protect her to honor him.
Shogo Kawada
Shogo is another primary character of Battle Royale. He is a lone wolf, an older transfer student who is a self-imposed outcast of the class. In the movie, Shogo alliances with Shuya and Noriko. His more cynical outlook contrasts with their more idealistic ones, as he is more willing to kill to survive. He tells them he knows a way out of the island if they can cooperate with them, and in the end, this plan works and all three escape.
Kazuo Kiriyama
Kazuo is one of the main antagonists of Battle Royale. A psychopath, he is blood-thirsty and brutal, even killing his allies. He displays a huge enjoyment in murder. During the student life days, Kazuo was the leader of a gang in the class. In the film, he is mute and does not speak.
Mitsuko Souma
Mitsuko Souma is the last female left standing in the Battle Royale aside from Noriko from the main trio. Mitsuko is presented as a loner and loser in the class, bullied by her classmates. She survives through obtaining a gun early on in the game. She is a desperate character who clings to survival, heightened by her mental anxiety.
