Bamboozled Imagery

Bamboozled Imagery

Unlevel Ground

We see Sloan holding a gun on Delacroix in one of the final scenes of the film. Lee tilts the camera and the image becomes un-level, which tells us that this is a moment that is far beyond normal, Sloan is not on even ground. The circumstances have shifted for Delacroix as his attempt to make his show "normal" have finally backfired upon him.

Final Montage

In the final scene of the film, Lee creates a montage of performances from blackface, to cartoons portraying black people and black actors in programs throughout time. The imagery is a wake up call to the injustice within the creation of these minstrel shows, and how the portrayal of being black on them has skewed the audiences perception of a black person. The issues are real and their is proof, if we pretend that it never happened it doesn't protect us from making the same horrific choices that allowed them to occur. This is a major point of the final imagery in the film.

Dunwitty's Office

Dunwitty is a man that is living an illusion by believing he is more black than Delacroix. When we see his office, the scenery drives his misconception home. His walls are lined with photographs of famous black men, and he has African statues throughout. It shows us one very specific thing: Dunwitty doesn't really fit into all of this, he has simply made himself a part of it because he says so.

Pink Sheets

We see an overhead shot looking down on Delacroix going over a script. There is smoke from his cigarette looming over him as he's buried his head in pink sheets of paper. The imagery is insightful to how he's being diminished, pressed down by the camera's angle, the smoke above him and he's being pulled down by the content of the script. He is lowered because of his choice to work on this project. The image shows us this. Yet he continues to work.
