Bad Feminist is a collection of essays by Roxane Gay. It was published in 2014 by Harper Perennial in English. The book confronts feminist ideologies, what a good feminist is and what a person can and can’t do, even though they love doing it. Several of Gay’s personal experiences are described and pondered upon.
There are five different parts of Bad Feminist. Part one is called “Me”, where Gay’s personal life is described, such as how she is a Haitian-American. The second part is called “Gender and Sexuality”, as well as “Race and Entertainment”, “Politics, Gender and Race” and last but not least “Back to Me”, where she puts the revelations she goes through in the book into her life and how it reflects in her day to day experiences.
Since the book was published in 2014, it was received during a time of turbulence in the feminist world. Within a short time, Trump had started campaigning and noting that he would like to be a candidate for the American presidency. The book generally received positive reviews, which stated that the stories were important and effective explanations for the readers.
