Avatar Quotes and Analysis

"Yes, she is a good hunter. But I've already chosen. But this woman must also choose me."

Jake

Jake says this to Neytiri as she is telling him about all his options for a mate in her tribe. He makes it clear that he desires her alone, if only she will choose him as well.

"Everything is backwards now, like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream."

Jake

After spending more time with the Na'vi and feeling more at home with the tribe, Jake feels that his reality has reversed, that his life embodying his avatar is realer than his life in the human world.

"So you just figured you'd come here, to the most hostile environment known to men, with no training of any kind, and see how it went? What was going through your head?"

Dr. Grace Augustine

Grace is quite stern with Jake on first meeting. He has replaced his brother, a Ph.D. who was training specifically for the mission, but Jake himself is a rather cocky and anti-intellectual Marine. With this line, she calls him out as not being an adequate replacement for his brainy brother.

"This is our land!"

Jake

In the battle against the RDA, Jake exclaims to his former employers that Pandora belongs to the Na'vi. What is unique about this exclamation is that while Jake has previously been a double agent, he is now fully and unequivocally siding with the Na'vi, and counting himself as one.

"You are not in Kansas anymore."

Quaritch

Quaritch says this to the military men as they arrive on Pandora, a reference to The Wizard of Oz, meant to signal that they are in a very foreign place.

"How does it feel to betray your own race?"

Quaritch

When Jake takes the side of the Na'vi once and for all, Quaritch confronts him with this line, suggesting that Jake's change of affiliations is not motivated by his own sense of what is right, but by a betrayal of his race. In Quaritch's eyes, the Na'vi are a racially inferior species that need to be blasted out of their home, so he cannot understand why Jake would be sympathetic to their plight.

"I See you."

Neytiri and Jake

Neytiri and Jake say this to one another as a way of communicating that they love one another and are committed to a mutual "seeing." The seeing that they allude to has a deep spiritual implication.

"Sky People cannot learn, you do not See."

Neytiri

Neytiri says this to Jake when she is skeptical about his ability to integrate with life as a Na'vi warrior. Given her past experience, she believes that humans are not open to learning about Na'vi life, and are hopeless when it comes to integrating into life on Pandora.

"You have a strong heart. No fear. But stupid! Ignorant like a child!"
Neytiri

This is Neytiri's response when Jake asks her why she rescued him. She admits that he seems to be brave and worthy of her help, but quickly adds that he is also stupid. This shows that Neytiri has conflicted feelings about Jake from the start; on the one hand, she thinks he is impressive, but on the other, she looks down on him and his naiveté.

"Just relax and let your mind go blank. That shouldn't be hard for you."

Grace Augustine

Dr. Augustine says this to Jake before he links with his avatar for the first time. It is a rather sarcastic remark referring to the fact that she doesn't think he is very bright or up to the tasks he must fulfill.
