Serge has an artistic eye, and when he sees a plain white paining with three black lines, buys it for the price of 200,000 francs. Serge is very happy with the piece of art, and marvels at its beauty.
Marc
Marc is the first person presented in the play, as he goes to visit Serge's apartment to see the new piece of art he purchased. He initially does not understand the beauty in the simple white piece, but in the end, he is able to connect a story to the painting.
Yvan
Yvan is both Serge and Marc's close friend. He tries closing the bridge between his two friends and remains neutral during the feud they have between themselves. The plan backfires and both his friends get angry at him, since he doesn't have an opinion.
