I am the captain of my soul
Ms. Widmer leaves the school when Ms. Baxter and Sally find out that she is a lesbian. So does her partner, Ms. Stevenson. In spite of constant whispering behind her back and accusations of ruining kids, she manages not to break, for she is a really good teacher and “ the captain of my soul ”. Her story is about bravery and an ability to forgive. After many years of successful teaching – the students loved her and so did their parents, for she taught them to love literature -, she is thrown away, but not broken
She can’t be expected to be perfect.
Liza’s mother is always “ sympathetic ” to her children, for she knows how much a teenager needs to know that he or she is loved and valued. Neither an earring incident not any other problem can break her trust in her daughter. Probably one of the best things a mother could say about her daughter, “ she can’t be expected to be perfect ”. This understanding that no one is flawless has always been helping her and is definitely going to help to accept her daughter’s orientation
You make me want to be real
Before Annie met Liza, she was a lonely girl who liked daydreaming about the future or her past. She lived in her fantasies and enjoyed pretending someone else with better and more eventful life. When the girls met, Annie felt that Liza made her “ want to be real ” and honest not only with Liza but herself. No matter how much of themselves they “ found to give each other, there was always more ” they wanted. If one has such a genuine feeling, there is no need and no reason to be someone else
