Annie on My Mind is a controversial novel that explores a romantic friendship between two teenage girls. Though it tackles the subject of same-sex relationships it also does an in-depth exploration into teenage emotions and identity. Generally, it is a story about friendship that blossoms into love conveying the fluid nature of romantic love. Consequently, the author showcases the social constructions that place parameters on what entails a romantic relationship between individuals. The conflict in the narrative arises from the prejudices and disapprovals of a heteronormative society. As a coming-of-age story, it contains the common trope of a character coming out of their shell with the aid of their confidante.
The plot revolves around Liza Winthrop and Annie Kenyon as they each find a friend and soul mate in one another. They have an instant connection once they meet at the museum and their romantic journey begins. Liza is less sure about her sexuality than Annie is, as she had not yet grappled with her own uncertainties and confusion. Thus, for her, the attraction and affection feel wrong though right at the same time. The story explores the theme of acceptance through self-discovery and the societal expectations the girls have to navigate. In terms of social acceptance, they only find it in Ms. Stevenson and Ms. Widmer who are also a lesbian couple. Moreover, this narrative explores the heteronormative view of queer sexuality as more of a superficial lusting rather than an emotional one. The plot highlights the progress of the girls’ relationship as it morphs from a close friendship whilst their feelings grow much deeper. Therefore, their different backgrounds and frames of mind show their connection as a natural and genuine one.
The story delves deeper into how society responds to constructs that challenge their set norms. Through Liza and Annie’s relationship, the author highlights the responses and reaction both in the private and public spheres. In the public sphere their relationship is handled as deviance and seeks someone to be held accountable. The lesbian teachers that offer them a haven to feel accepted are held responsible and fired in the process. Accordingly, the author expresses the distorted view a heteronormative society chooses to evaluate sexuality.
