Amnesia Summary

Amnesia Summary

Amnesia, a novel written by Peter Carey, focuses mainly on the subject of hacking. It details the story of a journalist by the name of Felix Moore, an elderly man who starts in a bad situation. He has just lost a court case, and needs to destroy all copies of his book. However, in trying to destroy the books, he accidentally burns down his house, and further distances himself from his already distant wife, Claire.

Baillieux is a young Australian hacker, who is born at the same time that the Australian government is overthrown on November 11th, 1975. She is brought up by her mother, an actor, and a Labor party politician dad. Gaby is eventually imprisoned with another man that she has worked with, Frederic. However, they escape when a virus disables the locks on all the prisons around the world.

In the novel, Moore writes a summary of the crimes and background of Gabrielle (Gaby) Baillieux, as prompted by Woody “Wodonga” Townes, a friend of Gaby's mother who wants to clear Gaby's image and allow Moore to make some money. Through Moore's research, the reader is allowed glimpses into Gaby's family history, and Moore's personal feelings during his time writing about Gaby.

The second half of the novel is narrated from a multitude of different voices that all appear on voice recording tapes. These allow the readers to sympathize with Moore's rough past, and also shock the reader with the dark thoughts that once echoed within Gaby's head.
