Gabrielle (Gaby) Baillieux
Gaby Baillieux is a young Australian girl who excels in hacking, and she is thrown in jail at the beginning. However, she escapes when the locks on all the jails mysterious break from an invading virus. For the most part, she has been dealing with loneliness for most of her life because of her distant parents, but the readers get a little insight into her head in the second part of the novel, where a glimpse of dark thoughts within her head are able to be shown through the voice recordings.
Felix Moore
Felix Moore is an elderly, yet energetic journalist who is rounded up to write Gaby's story. He is commonly referred to as, "a truffle hound for cheats and liars and crooks among the ruling classes." Moore is a person who begins in a bad place, losing a court case and accidentally burning down his house when trying to burn his offending books, actions which were required by the court. The second half of the book, which is made from tape recordings that Moore had compiled, reveals his tough past and rocky relationship with his wife.
Woody “Wodonga” Townes
Wodonga Townes is a friend of Gaby's mother, and for that reason, wants to rid Gaby of her bad name. He recruits Felix Moore to help write a life story and history of Gaby and her family, in hopes that seeing her dark past will ease the others' judgement. However, despair rules over his judgement, and he later starts pressuring Moore, even locking him up, to finish writing the article.
