How does Fabiola’s new life in Detroit differ from her life in Haiti?

Fabiola’s life takes a complete turn upon her arrival to Detroit. Upon her first steps into this new world, she notices the lack of color on the streets, comparing it to her colorful home. This is applicable to her future stay with her cousins and aunt, the lack of love, warmth and consideration. As she is accommodating to the new life, she notices some new freedoms that she didn’t have before, but there is the constant presence of her mother in her mind, as a reminder to not go astray.

What does the revelation about the three cousins say?

The revelation that the three cousins, the three bees, are the ones dealing drugs instead of Dray, comes as an unexpected twist. Prior to that, the novel focused on revealing their characters, fears, dreams and aspirations. It shows how desperation can lead even those who are least expected to commit wrongdoings for their survival and the survival of their family.

In what way is the magic shown in the novel?

Magic in the novel is shown through the character of Papa Legba, or Bad Leg. Papa Legba is the spirit guarding the house, and he appears on the first night of Fabiola’s stay, giving her hints through his riddled singing on how she can save her mother and her family. He guides and opens the doors to her, and at the end, saves her from Dray. Fabiola is a believer and practitioner of vodou and Papa Legba is a part of the vodou belief.
