Adrienne Rich's Poetry and Prose Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will practice close-reading poems for both literal and figurative meanings.

  2. 2

    Students will practice thinking and writing analytically about literature, using examples from Rich's poems and essays and literary terminology to explain how the text functions and crafts arguments.

  3. 3

    Students will become familiar with second-wave feminism and Rich's ideas about female sexuality.

  4. 4

    Students will identify themes in Rich's poetry and prose and examine how these themes develop over the course of her writing career.
