Madeleine L'Engle was born in 1918 in New York City. She was the only child of two creative parents: her father had been serving as a lieutenant in France when she was born, but was also an actor and a writer, and her mother was a pianist. Her parents were also wealthy and social, and Madeleine was raised in part by a nanny known as Mrs. O, whom Madeleine remembered with joy and as a deep part of her spiritual and religious care. When Madeleine was twelve, her parents moved to Europe, where she unhappily attended a Swiss boarding school.
