C.P.C.

An acronym that stands for "Common People's Convention." The political faction that Odili joins alongside Max to contest the incumbent P.O.P. candidates.

Colonialism

The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.

Prime Minister

The head of an elected government; the principal minister of a sovereign or state.

Post-Colonialism

The political or cultural condition of a former colony.

Cadillac

A large American luxury car that is the most prestigious brand of General Motors.

Cambridge

A prestigious and famous university founded in the twelfth century and located in England.

Ambassador

An official who represents his or her own country in a foreign country.

Pension

A sum of money paid regularly to a person who has retired.

Entourage

The group of people who travel with and work for an important or famous person.

Kilimanjaro

A volcanic mountain in Northern Tanzania that is recognized as the highest peak in Africa.

Bori

The capital of the fictional African country that serves as the novel's setting.

Yam

A moist, usually orange-fleshed sweet potato that is consumed in tropical and subtropical countries.

Scandalous

Causing general public outrage by a perceived offense against morality or law.

Grammar School

A school for the first four to six grades, and usually including kindergarten.

Peace Corps

A volunteer program run by the United States government. Its official mission is to provide social and economic development abroad through technical assistance, while promoting mutual understanding between Americans and populations served.

Unconcealed

Something that is obvious.

Mandibular

A lower jaw consisting of a single bone or of completely fused bones

Counterfeit

Made in imitation of something else, with intent to deceive.

Puzzled

Confused by a problem difficult to solve or a situation difficult to resolve.

Chauffeur

A person employed to drive a motor vehicle.
