Students and teachers alike should be encouraged to be mindful of neocolonial, capitalist, and patriarchal themes in the narrative and consider how their particular perspectives may inform their experience of those themes. This novel is an excellent opportunity to probe those themes, but teachers should emphasize to students that their peers may have had radically different experiences regarding these very modern issues and that respect must be the cornerstone of all classroom discussions.
