Robb Stark
Robb is Lord of Winterfell, the eldest son of Catelyn and Eddard Stark. He is s young boy of fifteen declared King of The North by his supporters. He inherited his father’s sense of honor and justice and he is frequently accompanied by his direwolf, Grey Wind. He develops quickly after the war starts and his mother notices that he is no longer a little boy but rather a grown man.
Catelyn Tully
Catelyn is the Lady of Winterfell, the wife of the deceased Eddard Stark. Catelyn is a beautiful woman who refuses to dress opulently and choses to stay simple. Even though she is proud, she is an intelligent woman who understands the political matters in the land and supports her son by trying to make peace with Renly. She is one of the major POV characters in the book.
Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys is one of the major POV in the book. She is a young girl of fourteen, the last surviving member of house Tragaryen. She was married to Khal Drogo and remained Khalessi to a small group of Dothraki that continued to follow her. She is named Mother of Dragons because of her three dragons that hatched when she entered the flames burning her husband’s pyre. She is determined to take back the Iron Throne from the Usurper and she travels through the Red Waste in hope of finding someone who will help her take the throne. Even if she is still young, she is a mature girl, driven by the belief that she is the true heir to the Iron Throne.
Jon Snow
Jon Snow is the bastard son of Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell, killed in the first book for treason. He is one of the major POV in the book. He is Mormont’s squire and steward and he takes part in the expedition beyond the Wall led by Mormont. Afterwards he is picked to accompany one of the three scouting parties into the mountains, led by the famous Qhorin Halfhand. When the scouting party is killed, Jon follows Qhorin’s advice and betrays the Watch by yielding and killing Qhorin. Jon is always accompanied by his direwolf, Ghost.
Jeor Mormont
Also called the Old Bear, Mormont is the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He takes three hundred men beyond the Wall to find more about Mance Raider’s plans. He has broad-shoulders and a stern gaze. He has lost most of his hair save for his shaggy grey-white beard. He is a considered strong, resolute leader, a formidable battle commander and is also fearless in the face of adversity. Jeor is always accompanied by his pet raven, which is constantly demanding corn.
Queen Cersei
Cersei is the widow of King Robert, twin to Jamie and Queen Regent and Protector of the Realm until Joffrey comes of age. Despite being really beautiful, she is a cunning and cruel woman, caring only about her children and twin brother with whom she is involved in an incestuous relationship. Even though she loves Jamie, she hates Tyrion and it is possible that she paid one of the members from the Kingsguard to kill him during the battle of Black Water.
Joffrey Baratheon
Joffrey is the heir to the Iron Throne, Robert’s eldest son. After Robert’s death, the rumor that Joffrey is actually Jamie’s son started the war between the five kings who all base their claim to the throne more or less on Joffrey’s illegitimacy. Joffrey is described as having his mother’s looks, with blond hair and green eyes. He is sadistic and proud, using his status as King to do whatever he wants. He listens to no one and his mother is no longer able to control him. He remains engaged to Sansa Stark in the second book but he mistreats her, commanding his guards to publicly beat her on numerous occasions.
Tyron Lannister
Also called the Imp, Tyron is the dwarf son of Tywin Lannister. He is the youngest child, his mother dying during his birth. In the second book, he is named Hand of The King by his father and returns to King’s Landing. His sister Cersei slowly loses her power and influence as Tyron slowly removes those loyal to her. Tyron also cleans the city by removing the corrupt people from high positions. Despite his struggle to help the people in the city, he is hated and seen as the responsible one for the hunger in King’s Landing. He is badly injured in the battle of Black Water when a member from the Kingsguard tries to kill him.
Ser Jorah Mormont
Ser Jorah Mormont is an exiled knight, the former head of House Mormont and Lord of Bear Island who fled from King’s Landing to escape being executed. He is a middle-aged man that began to serve Danenerys since her marriage with Khal Drogo . He is the first one to swear fealty to her and then he begins to counsel her. Gradually, his feelings move from being platonic to a more romantic level, change also noticed by Daenerys.
Rodrik Cassel
Ser Rodrik is the master-at-arms at Winterfell, having trained Robb, Jon and Theon. He is easily recognizable after his white whiskers and he is known not to enjoy music. He has an only child, Beth who was raised at Winterfell and became close to Sansa. Ser Rodrik remains in charge at Winterfell after Robb goes to war. He dies in the battle of Winterfell, being killed by Ramsay Snow.
Walder Frey
Walder Frey is the Lord of the Crossing and head of House Frey. Though almost ninety years old and infirm, he still maintains an active hand in the running of his house. He is referred to as the late Lord Frey by many houses because their army arrived at the Trident during Robert’s rebellion only after Robert had already won. Powerful and wealthy, the house Frey is sworn to House Tully but they agreed to help them only after Robb agreed to take one of Walder’s daughter’s as wife. Lord Walder married eight times and has over one hundred children.
Stannis Baratheon
He is Lord of Dragonstone, Robert’s older brother. After Robert’s death, he claimed the throne, basing his claim on Joffrey’s illegitimacy. He is a stern man, not easy to love, who rarely smiles. He resents Robert for giving him Dragonstone and is jealous on his younger brother, Renly. He has no male heirs, only a girl who was left disfigured after an illness almost killed her while she was still a baby.
Sansa Stark
Sansa is Eddard’s oldest daughter, taken to King’s Landing to be weed to Joffrey. She is twelve years old in the book and she is one of the major POV. After her father is killed, she remains engaged to Joffrey and remains in King’s Landing. She is often beaten by the knights in the Kingsguard because of her brother but she continues to remain a lady and try to be as polite as possible. After House Tyrell comes to Joffrey’s aid, her engagement with Joffrey is broken when Joffrey decides that he will marry Tyrell’s daughter. Sansa continues to remain in King’s Landing.
Sandor Clegane
Also called the Hound, he is a member of House Clegane, the Mountain’s younger brother. After Joffrey becomes King, Sandor is made a member of his Kingsguard. He is loyal to Joffrey and his cruel nature scares almost everyone. He shows a somehow gentle side to Sansa while she is being mistreated by Joffrey and even offers to take her away with him when he leaves King’s Landing during the Battle of Black Water.
Yoren
Yoren is one of the ‚’wandering crows’’, traveling throughout the land and getting recruits for the Wall. He takes Arya from King’s Landing after her father’s death and wants to take her back to her family. He has a certain loyalty for the Stark family and is known for losing only three recruits during the thirty years he wandered the land looking for men for the Watch. He is described as having bad manners, having a foul smell and a twisted shoulder that prevents him from fighting.
Ser Davos Seaworth
Also called the Onion Knight, Davos was once a smuggler that helped King Stannis during Robert’s Rebelion. For his service, Stannis knighteed him and now Davos works for him. Davis is loyal to King Stannis yet he is always truthful when Stannis asks for his advice. He has five sons who serve Stannis, and four of them died during the Battle of Blackwater. He is a humble man, never forgetting his past and he doesn’t let himself be blinded by wealth like the others.
Melisandre
Melisandre is a priestess of R'hllor and a shadowbinder, hailing from the eastern city of Asshai. She has joined the entourage of Stannis Baratheon, believing him to be Azor Ahai reborn, a hero destined to defeat the Great Other. She has become an influential advisor to him and his family.
Renly Baratheon
Renly was Stannis and Robert’s younger brother. After Robert died, he claimed the Iron Throne, angering his older brother, Stannis. Renly was master of laws in Robert’s small council and also Lord of Storm's End. Stannis resented his brother because Storm’s End was supposed to be his by birth right but Robert decided to give it to Renly. In the book, Renly is married with Margaery.
Samwell Tarly
Sam joins the Great Ranging to the Far North and is placed in charge of the ravens as Lord Commander Mormont's aide. When the expedition stays a night at Craster's Keep he is befriended by Gilly, one of daughter-wives of Craster, who is pregnant and fearful that if she has a boy, Craster will sacrifice it to the Others. Samwell, unsure of what to do, turns to Jon for help, but there is nothing that Jon can do.
Ser Gregor Clegane
Also called The Mountain because of his height and power, Gregor is the head of House Clegane . He is known for his cruelty and that he hacks his enemies in half on the battlefield. He serves Lord Lannister and his younger brother is the Hound, Joffrey’s personal guard.
Ser Jamie Lannister
Also called the Kingslayer, Jamie is a twin to Queen Cersei. He is the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and also Warden of the East. After the Battle of the Whispering Wood, Jamie remains a prisoner at Riverrun.
Theon Greyjoy
Theon is the only surviving son of Lord Baleon Greyjoy. After Robert’s rebellion, Theon was taken by Eddard Stark to Winterfell as a result of his father’s actions. Theon became really close to Robb Stark and he fights beside him before returning to his father with a peace treaty from Robb. Theon decides to remain beside his father to prove his worth but he is seen as being one of the Straks. In order to prove his father wrong, he decides to conquer Winterfell with only a handful of people. He is known for being vain and promiscuous, and his insecurities reach the surface in the second book, when he starts to questions where his loyalty lies.
Arya
Arya is a girl of ten, one of Eddard’s daughters. After her father is killed, Yoren takes her with the group of boys he took from King’s Landing for the Wall. In order not to be discovered, she pretends she is a boy. After Yoren is killed, she ends up a as a serving girl at Harrenhal. Arya is different from her sister because she is not lady-like and prefers to fight. After she is taken to Harrenhal, she loses her wit and courage but she eventually manages to escape.
Brandon Stark
Often called Bran, he is a boy of eight, heir to Winterfell. Bran is paralyzed from the waist down after he felt while climbing the walls of Winterfell. After Robb goes South, Bran remains at Winterfell and rules in his father’s absence. He quickly becomes friends with Meera and Jojen Reed who tells him about the green dreams. During the Battle of Winterfell, Jojen, Meera, Osha, Rickon and Hodor hide in the crypts and everyone believes them to be dead. After they get out, Jojen, Meera, Hodor and Bran go North.
Tywin Lannister
He is Lord of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West, Shield of Lannisport and Hand of the King, the head of the most wealthy family in the King’s Landing. He has three children, Jamie, Cersei and Tyrion. He was the Hand of the Mad King and then secured an allegiances with King Robert by marring his daughter to him. Just like his daughter, Tywin dislikes Tyrion because his birth caused the death of his wife and also because of his frequent whoring.
Asha
Asha is the captain of Black Wind and the daughter to Balon Greyjoy. Asha took over the role of heir to the Greyjoy house after Theon was taken by Eddard Stark and Theon starts to envy her because the iron men see her as the heir to the throne. Asha is fierce and proud, and defies traditional ironborn gender roles by commanding her own ship, the Black Wind, and leading men into battle.
Podrick Payne
Also called Pod, Podrick is Tyrion’s squire. He is a young boy with thin, black hair. Podrick saves Tyrion during the Battle of the Black Water.
Hallis Mollen
He is the captain of guards at Winterfell.
Bronn
Bronn is a sellsword in the service of Tyrion. He becomes the head of Tyrion’s guards and is in charge of hiring sellswords. After the battle, he is knighted for his service.
Shae
She is Tyron’s concubine, a prostitute that followed him. She is eighteen years old, with black hair. Tyron starts to like her and brings her to King’s Landing despite his father’s commands not to. He ensures that Shae is safe and hidden from his sister.
Meryn Trant
He is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard, guarding him during the battle of Black Water.
Arys Oakheart
Arys is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard, sent to Dorne to protect Myrcella. He is regarded as being the kindest in the Kingsguard.
Preston Greenfield
Ser Preston is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard. Ser Preston is part of the procession to see Princess Myrcella off to Dorne. When the mob goes mad in the streets of King's Landing, Preston tries to cut his way back to aid the High Septon against the mob and is killed by the maddened people.
Mandon Moore
Ser Mandon is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard. He tries to kill Tyrion during the Battle of Blackwater but dies after Pod pushes him into the water.
Aron Santagar
Ser Aron is the master-at –arms at Red Keep. He is killed by an angry mob.
Balon Swann
Balon is the second son to Lord Gulian. Ser Balon takes Ser Preston Greenfield’s place in the Kingsguard after Ser Preston is killed.
Ermesande Hayford
Lady Ermesande Hayford is Lady of Hayford and head of House Hayford, a noble house of the Crownlands. She is still a baby and is the last of her line.
Dontos Hollard
Ser Dontos Hollard is a knight from House Hollard, at court in King's Landing. He is usually drunk and on Joffrey’s name day he turned drunk for the touring. Joffrey wanted to kill him because of this but Sansa convinces him not to. Instead of this, Dantos is made a foul at the court.
Meera Reed
Merra is Howland’s daughter. In the book, she is a maid of fifteen, sent to Winterfell with her brother. She is tall, flat chested, with green eyes and skilled in battle. After the battle of Winterfell, she, her brother and Bran go north.

Ser Axell Florent is a knight of House Florent who serves as the castellan of Dragonstone for his nephew-in-law Stannis Baratheon. He is the younger brother of Lord Alester Florent.
Alester Florent
Alester Florent is Lord of Brightwater and head of House Florent.
Cressen
A maester that served Stannis Baratheon at Dragonstone. He is old, about eighty years old, with a bad hip that causes him to have trouble walking. He is the one that raised the Baratheon children after Lord Steffon Baratheon died. Cressen became very attached to Stannis, considering him as being the son he never had. He dies when he tries to poison the Red Priestess, hoping that in that way he will save Stannis from her influence.
Pylos
A maester of the Citadel sent to Dragonstone. He is calm and very polite, ending up replacing Crassen after his death.
Shireen Baratheon
Shireen is the only surviving child of Stannis Bratheon. She is nine years old in the book and is described as a sweet child despite her unattractive appearance.
Ebben
He is a ranger from the Shadow Tower. He is one of the rangers chosen by Ser Malister to scout the wildlings and he is killed by one of the wildlings who cut off his head.
Rattleshirt
A wildling scouting party commander.
Stonesnake
A ranger from the Shadow Tower. He is chosen to go with the party scouting the Skirling Pass. He manages to escape the wildlings because of his ability to climb very well.
Dalbridge
A senior ranger that is killed by wildlings near the Skirling Pass. He was the squire of King Jaehaerys II Targaryen and is one of the best archers in the Watch.
Lommy Greenhands
One of the orphan boys that Yoren took from Kings’ landing. He was a dyer’s apprentice before he was caught stealing. He is killed by Raff the Sweetling.
Koss
He is one of the men Yoren took to the Wall. Before he was arrested, Koss was a poacher. He is killed in the attack commanded by Ser Amory Lorch.
Hot Pie
He is an orphan boy taken from King’s Landing by Yoren. He is eventually made a servant at Harrenhal and put to work in the kitchens.
Margery Tyrell
Margery is a beautiful maid of fifteen years old wed to Renly Baratheon. She is the fourth child of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden.

He is the second son of Mace Tyrell. Garlan takes part in the battle of Black Water alongside the Lannisters.
Loras Tyrell
Loras is the third son of Lord Mace Tyrell. He is made commander of the Rainbow Guard by Renly.
Ser Denys Mallister
He is a knight of House Mallister and a member of the Night's Watch. He has commanded the Shadow Tower for thirty-three years. He is an uncle of Lord Jason Mallister. He is the Commander at the Shadow Tower.
Qhorin
Also called Halfhand, he is a senior ranger from the Shadow Tower. He takes Jon Snow, Dalbridge and Ebben to scout the Skirling Pass. He is killed by Jon Snow after they are caught by wildlings.
Alliser Thorne
Ser Alliser is a knight and the master-at-arms of the Night's Watch at Castle Black. He is sent to King’s Landing to ask for more men for the Night’s Watch after King Joffrey takes the throne.
Irri and Jhiqui
They are dothraki handmaids to Daenerys. They were both wedding gifts to Daenerys and have the same age as her.
Doreah
She is a Lyseni slave, formerly a whore who is given to Daenerys as a wedding gift. Doreah dies in the march through the red waste.

Hober is Horas’ twin brother, keep in King’s Landing as a hostage for the good behavior of their father. While his brother remains a captive, Hober accompanies Petyr in his attempt to get house Tyrell on their side.
Mace Tyrell
Mace is the Lord of Highgarden who takes Renly’s side after he marries Margaery. After Renly dies, Mace ends up helping Joffrey and as a reward he asks him to take Margaery as his wife.
Gendry
Gendry is one of the orphan boys that Yoren took to the Wall. He was a former apprentice to a smith and became close to Arya. He was the first person to notice that Arya was a girl and learn about her true identity. He is tall and muscular with blue eyes and thick, black hair.
Cutjack
He is one of the men Yoren took for the Wall. Cutjack used to be a stonemason.
Donal Noye
Armorer and smith at Castel Black. He lost one arm during Robert’s Rebelion.
Kurz
He is one of the criminals Yoren took from King’s Landing. He was arrested because he was a poacher. He dies after he gets injured and his wounds become infected.
Jaqen H'ghar
Jaqen H'ghar is the name of a sly Lorathi criminal who meets Arya Stark on her way to the Wall. He is kept in a cage during the journey north. He is saved by Arya when a fire breaks out and he helps her while they are at Harrenhal. He has a strange appearance, with his hair half white and red.
Roger
Roger is another criminal taken from the cells in King’s Landing by Yoren. He is kept chained in a wagon during the trip north with Jaqen H’ghar and Bitter.
Biter
Biter is a prisoner taken by Yoren from the black cells in King’s Landing. His tongue has been cut out and his teeth filed into points.
