A Burnt-Out Case is English novelist Graham Greene's nineteenth novel, published in 1960. The story follows a disillusioned and apathetic man named Querry, who is fleeing the fame and success he garnered as an architect in Europe. Querry arrives at a Catholic-run leproserie—or leprosy colony—deep in the central-African jungle. Once at the leproserie, Querry is diagnosed by the doctor, Doctor Colin, as being a (figurative) "burnt-out case," or a leper who is no longer infectious but is physically mutilated. As Querry puts aside his identity as the Querry and works in service of the leproserie, he finds a way to heal.
