About the Author

Nikole Hannah-Jones is the staff writer at The New York Times magazine who first pitched the idea for The 1619 Project. She is an investigative reporter and co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. She proclaims that Ida B. Wells, Ethel Payne, Simeon Booker, and Claude Sitton are her inspirations. Much of her reporting has been about segregation, race in the United States, and public policy. In 2017, she won the MacArthur “Genius” grant. She has also won several other awards including the Peabody Award, the Ripple Effect Award, the National Education Award, and the National Magazine Award, and was featured on The Root 100.
