Written by an award-winning author, Zorrie follows a young American girl called Zorrie Underwood, who has suffered a great deal in her life. She lost both her parents to an illness, and after an aunt, who was like a mother to her, passed, Zorrie was left to fend for herself in a cruel world.
She decides to leave her home in Indiana and after barely surviving by working odd jobs, and finally discovering a position in a radium factory. Nevertheless, Indiana pulls Zorrie back home where she slowly regains her sense of home and belonging, but new trials of life await her still.
Set in a Depression-era America, this novel is realism at its core, showing life as a set of trials and suffering, with an occasional glance at joy and kindness. It was published in 2021 and nominated for National Book Award.
