Joe Goldberg
Joe is the main character in the story, as well as the narrator. He is obsessive and disturbed as he wishes to have total control and unconditional love from a girl he meets in his bookshop. His obsession is Beck. He is smart and is able to stage a series of events that is supposed to lead her into his waiting, open arms. It is assumed that he comes from a normal family with good friends, as he generally is respected by his peers. It is when the reader is led into his mind and hidden corners that they realize that he is a psychopath, and will do anything for the people he "loves".
Guinevere Beck
Guinevere Beck, or just “Beck” as she liked to be called, is also emotionally damaged. She - similarly to Joe - is seemingly living her best life as a young woman in a big city. She is an author, trying to write her next big breakthrough, though she doesn't have inspiration nor the want to write. She feels pressure by the world to be the best version of herself and seeks both comfort and self-worth through the eyes of others- letting them abuse her for their gain.
Benji
Benji is Guinevere’s on and off boyfriend. He is a playboy that met Beck when she was younger. He leads her on, only visiting her when he wants to have sex. Their intimacy is what leads Beck on, holding on to him wishing for solace while he is out and about with other girls. He is eventually killed by Joe, as Joe sees him as an obstacle that is in the way of him getting is dream girl.
