Written on the Body is a fictional romance novel published in 1994 and written by Jeanette Winterson. An incredibly notable feat of the novel is that the narrator, who is in love with another character in the novel, never has their gender or identity revealed. Still Winterson does not let this interfere with her writing, but it can be difficult to neither mention a gender nor name. By posing the question to readers of what marriage and love is, the novel is a very unique work of literature.
Jeanette Winterson first became famous after publishing her semi-autobiographical piece titled Oranges are Not the Only Fruit. Born in 1959, she has lived in Britain her whole life, and is an activist (as seen through her writing) of human rights and inequality issues. Winterson has one several literature awards, such as the Whitbread Prize, and is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
