Consuelo "Connie" Ramos
Connie is a Mexican-American woman from the 1970s who is impoverished. Connie has been incarcerated in a mental institution after incidents of drug-related child neglect, which lost her custody of her daughter. In the opening of the novel, Connie is re-committed for striking her niece's abusive pimp. She is perceptive and empathetic which allows her to commune with Luciente.
"Dolly" Dolores
Connie's niece, Dolly seeks her out because she is being forced by her pimp into having an illegal abortion. Connie strikes Dolly's pimp to protect her, which causes her Aunt to be involuntarily recommitted for violent behavior.
Luciente
An androgynous young woman from the year 2137. She is time traveling from a future where the goals of the civil rights movement have been fulfilled. She communes with Connie and introduces her to the future community of Mattapoisett.
