The narrator
The narrator of the novel is also the main character. We never get to know his name. He is a member of the Native American Blackfoot tribe. A long time has passed since his older brother's death, but he is still troubled by it.
Theresa
Theresa is the narrator's mother. She is described as a stout handsome woman with a strong and cold character.
Lame Bull
Lame Bull is the man Theresa marries. He obviously married her because of her property.
Agnes
Agnes is a girl the narrator brought home as his wife but, she eventually runs away with his gun and razor.
Yellow Calf
Yellow Calf is an old man living three miles away from narrators home. He is thought to be the member of Gros Ventre tribe but, at the end, the narrator discovers that he is actually a member of Blackfeet tribe and Theresa's real father.
Mose
Mose is the narrator's brother who died in an accident when he was fourteen. The novel is intertwined with the narrator's present time and flashbacks from his childhood when he took care of the cattle with his brother.
First Raise
First Raise is the name of the narrators father. He is described as a reckless wanderer, but he loved his children very much.
