William Dean Howells: Short Stories Irony

The Old Women - “Worries of a Winter Walk”

The timeworn females’ state of affairs is implausible; Howells would not anticipate them to labour unduly during their prime age. William Dean Howell discerns, “They (the old women) may have been about sixty years, or sixty-five, the time of life when most women are grandmothers and are relegated on their merits to the cushioned seats of their children’s homes, softly silk-gowned and lace-capped, dear visions of lilac and lavender, to be loved and petted by their grandchildren. The fancy can hardly put such sweet ladies in the place of those nimble beldams, who hopped about there in the wind-swept street, plucking up their day’s supply of firing from the involuntary bounty of the cart.” William Dean Howell’s prospect for the womenfolk, in view of their oldness, is ironic. Although they appear to be grandmothers, they are still slogging through life instead of relaxing contentedly in their children’s tranquil homes. Clearly, the old females’ circumstances designates that it is not a warranty for all individuals to repose during their adulthood; for some aged folks, hustling disproportionately is obligatory because of obliging circumstances.

Photographs - “Summer Isles Of Eden”

The photographic depiction of ‘Easter lilies” is ironic: “ The fields of Easter lilies do not quite live up to their photographs; they are presently suffering from a mysterious blight, and their flowers are not frequent enough to lend them that sculpturesque effect near to, which they wear as far off as New York.” Photographs exemplify gorgeous imagery of the ‘Easter lilies”; however, the expose is not lifelike because it embellishes their form to obscure blights which would have solidified their repulsiveness. Accordingly, magnificent photographs should be construed in the framework of photography which is contradictory to the lilies’ typical form. Photography is a practice of creativity that aggrandizes imageries so it should not be utilized an unqualified meter of regular appearance.
