Willa of the Wood is an allegory for the corruption of isolated, primitive societies at the hands of colonizers (which occurred frequently throughout history).

Motif: Humanity's Evil

Humanity’s evil is a very common motif throughout the book - though particularly at the start of the book. Willa and her clan hate humans because of their role in destroying their homes in the forest.
