Exemption from liability
Sitting on the balcony, Ingrid and her daughter Astrid like to enjoy the fresh air, especially when oleander blossoms. Then suddenly Ingrid says that this is a wonderful time, because “lovers, who kill each other now, will blame it on the wind.” Of course, this is an ironic joke, because the air smells of oleander, which is poisonous, and Ingrid decides to joke about it. People can be poisoned with juice of oleander, if only it gets into the skin.
“Generous” legacy
Children always receive chic gifts from their parents. Moreover, even if it is a small box with a surprise, every child will be pleased. However, the legacy of Astrid is not so luxurious. “It is her legacy to shed lives like snakeskin, a new truth for each new page, a moral amnesiac.” It is an irony of fate, because Ingrid could well support Astrid’s life with the help of a career and her talent.
To live means to suffer
One day, Astrid asks her foster mother Rena about the meaning of life. She is wonder that people always bother. “Why do people wake up every morning? Why not just drink turpentine (poison)?” To be honest, it is Astrid’s ironic joke about turpentine. In fact, she just does not understand why people are so worried about their problems, if there are many simple solutions.
