Sequoyah
The main character and the one narrating the novel, Sequoyah, as an older man, tells his story from his youth. He is part Native American, part white, and always had trouble with his identity. His struggles while growing up weren't helped by his alcoholic mother, whose behavior put Seq into foster care.
Rosemary
Rosemary is also of Native American heritage, and she and Seq bond over that as well as their sense of displacement. Rosemary is suffering from depression, and ends up committing suicide in front of Seq, which inspired him to tell his story.
George
George is another boy who was put under care of Troutts. He is describes as intelligent, but also suffering from depression and anxiety. He reveals to Seq about the Mr. Troutt's hidden money.
Harold Troutt
Harold Troutt is the foster father of Seq, Rosemary and George. He is also in some questionable business, and hides the money from that. He accuses Rosemary of stealing his money, which makes her depression escalate.
