Charley
Charley is one of the main characters and protagonists of the short children's story, When Charley Met Emma. Charley is a young boy who sees Emma, a girl in a wheelchair, while at a playground. At first, he is confused, as he has never seen anyone like Emma before. In his head, he goes through some different scenarios of how he things she ended up in a wheelchair.
Charley eventually gathers the courage to approach Emma, who he realizes is actually quite nice. He asks many questions - to learn, not to be rude. He learns that what his mother said about the positivity that difference can bring, and the importance of accepting everything, is in fact true advice.
Emma
Emma is a main character and protagonist of the short children's book When Charley Met Emma, alongside Charley. Emma is at the playground, but she stands out from all of the other children because she is in a wheelchair. Charley approaches her and begins asking questions, and she calmly answers all of them. She feels accepted because someone is talking to her organically, and believes it is important for differently-abled people to be included in everyday discourse and childhood activities.
