What Girls Need Themes

Challenging stereotypes

Porges herself embodies the endless possibilities available to women. She went on to gain a degree in the male-dominated field of Geophysics, flew jets for the US Navy and worked in counterterrorism under the Obama Administration. These are all ways she has personally challenged the proposed ideals of what girls should grow up to be.

Empowering women

The key message behind this book is to encourage and motivate a new generation of young girls to go on and be successful in whatever field they desire. Porges is physically making this happen in her role as the eighth Headmaster of The Baldwin School, a 130-year-old all-girls school that is known for making renowned global leaders that break the mold of the stereotype of a woman’s role in the world.

The importance of education

Throughout the book, Porges seems to reinforce the power of education, both verbally and through her own life experiences. Porges herself has gone on to study degrees in geophysics, comparative politics and security studies. All of these have allowed her to foster and accumulate knowledge about the status of the world and provide her with a worldly outlook on life, that she can provide to her students at The Baldwin School.
