In her debut novel Weyward, Emilia Hart presents the story of three remarkable women: Altha, Violet, and Kate, each from different periods but bound by a common lineage of power, defiance, and connection to nature.
The novel begins in 2019 in London, where Kate lives with her boyfriend. As Simon's behavior worsens, Kate escapes to her ancestral home, Weyward Cottage. After learning she is pregnant, Kate fears that Simon will track her down. While exploring the cottage, she discovers a diary from her ancestors, revealing Altha's story, which begins in 1619 in Crows Beck, England. Altha, a healer, is accused of witchcraft after helping a friend escape an abusive marriage, which leads to the death of a farmer. Although she survives the witchcraft accusations, she documents her experiences and passes on her knowledge to future generations.
After this, Violet's story unfolds in 1942 in Orton Hall. Born into a repressive family, Violet learns of her mother’s connection to the Weyward lineage. After being manipulated and abused by her father and cousin, she is sent to Weyward Cottage to hide her pregnancy. There, she comes across Altha's journal and uncovers a method to terminate the pregnancy resulting from sexual assault. This discovery empowers Violet, giving her the courage to fight for herself, leading her to pursue a career as an entomologist and fully embrace her freedom.
After reading the diaries, Kate realizes she shares her ancestors’ powers, including a connection with nature and the ability to heal. When Simon tracks her down to Weyward Cottage, she defends herself with the help of a swarm of birds and insects. Finally, Kate feels confident in her ability to live a free and secure life.
