The Theme of Belonging Across Formats: The ten canoes + We are Going + Journey to belonging 12th Grade
Belonging is an essential part of life, without belonging we experience a lack of understanding which evolves into the establishment of separation and alienation from our communities. Our connections between people around us and our communities have a large impact on our sense of belonging or alienation. As depicted in the film ‘Ten Canoes’(2006) directed by Rolf de Heer and by the omniscient narrator, David Gulpilil, the concept of belonging is represented through the use of themes which present the role of the family, social values and attitudes and personal relationships. Similarly, the poem ‘We are going’ by Oodgeroo and the newspaper article “Journey to Belonging” by Ryan Sheales (Sydney Morning Herald March, 10 2013) highlights the concept of belonging, which adds credibility and nourishes the audience’s understanding of belonging.
The film ‘Ten Canoes’ illustrates Aboriginal life before European settlement while distinctively depicting the role of the family. The role of the family displays the love and unity amongst all tribe members which is enhanced by belonging to the land.
