Stewart
Stewart is a stereotypical nerd, getting good grades but nothing good when it comes to interacting with other people. Frequently being bullied doesn't help his situation at home - his father is not married and moves in with the mother of Ashley. Ashley is completely different from himself, and Stewart does not know if he can live in the same house as her. However, she does possess the ability to do something he has always wished to do - talk to people. He learns that maybe he can become a better person, and have a better life, if he can learn from Ashley, and make the best out of the situation at hand.
Ashley
Not nearly as smart as Stewart, Ashley barely passes her classes. However, she is popular, and that is her main source of entertainment. Meant to be the antagonist of the story because she is on the side that would bully Stewart, Ashley isn't really that bad. She realizes that she will lose her popularity if people find out that Stewart is now living with her, but, as the novel continues, she thinks it wouldn't be that bad after all. A dynamic character because we get to see her change for the better, Ashley has made an important step in her life.
Ashley's Mother
One of the few other characters in the novel besides Stewart and Ashley, Ashley's mother is a static character that fell in love with Stewart's father. No longer married, she tries to make the situation as easy as possible on Ashley, but does not fully realize the trouble that Ashley is going through when a nerd moves into her house.
Stewart's Father
Even though you don't know him that well, you find Stewart's father to be a lovable man. No longer married, he has moved in with his son to Ashley's mother's house. He wants to help Stewart become accustomed to the move, but is unaware of the troubles already brewing at school dealing with bullying. However, he and Ashley's mother love each other very much, and a 'foolish child quibble' isn't going to keep them apart.
