After making sure they aren’t being followed, Melba and her mother arrive home. Grandma India has been watching the news and rushed them into the house, informing them that Elizabeth made it out safely, as did the others who were with Mrs. Bates and the ministers. None of the Little Rock Nine made it into the school. Melba’s mother considers sending her to her old school, but her grandmother argues against this. Melba reluctantly also agrees that if she doesn’t go back, the white folk will think they’ve won.
