British poet and playwright Carol Ann Duffy was born in 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved to Staffordshire, England with her family at the age of six. Both of her parents—an electrical fitter and a homemaker—were Irish Catholic, and Duffy was educated in convent schools until she went to Liverpool University to study philosophy. Duffy had already been publishing her poetry in journals since she was fourteen; after she graduated from Liverpool University, she began writing for television and working as a writer-in-residence in London schools.
