Un Lun Dun Literary Elements

Un Lun Dun Literary Elements

Genre

Young Adult Fiction, Science Fiction

Setting and Context

London, and UnLondon, a mirror-world that is almost an underworld version of London itself

Narrator and Point of View

The point of view is that of Deeba, who is the Unchosen One and the protagonist of the novel.

Tone and Mood

The tone is rather unbelievable and nonsensical at first. It is also threatening and rather overwhelming.

Protagonist and Antagonist

Deeba is the protagonist; the Smog is the antagonist.

Major Conflict

The major conflict that applies to all of the characters is conflict with the Smog. Deeba has a physical conflict with it, and eventually emerges victorious after using the UnGun to neutralize it.

Climax

Deeba gets hold of the UnGun and uses it to defeat the Smog, saving UnLondon.

Foreshadowing

At the start of the novel, there is a large threatening cloud following Zannah, which turns out to be the Smog. This foreshadows the battle ahead and the girls' trip into UnLondon.

Understatement

N/A

Allusions

The narrative alludes to the Clean Air Act of 1956, although not by its correct name; it is called the Klinneract and is believed to have been a force for good in the battle against pollution.

Imagery

The imagery in UnLondon is all very dark and threatening. It begins with the cloud that is revealed to be the Smog, and continues throughout the girls' time in UnLondon, which is never in sunlight but always under shadow of darkness.

Paradox

Zanna is The Chosen One, but it is in fact Deeba who defeats the Smog and enables the UnLondoners to achieve freedom.

Parallelism

There is a parallel between London and UnLondon, although it is a mirror parallel, in that whatever takes place in London, the opposite takes place in UnLondon.

Metonymy and Synecdoche

The Propheseers is the term used to encompass the allies that Deeba and Zanna meet in UnLondon.

Personification

The Smog is personified; it is a noxious and carcinogenic cloud of radioactive waste, and as such can have no emotion or intention, yet it is the main antagonist with the intention of taking over UnLondon.
