Benjamin
Benjamin is the story's protagonist and husband to Helen. Benjamin comes from a rich family, and his primary objective is to create wealth. Despite being a successful tycoon, Benjamin is rude and heartless because he despises those below him.
Benjamin's relationship with his wife is unbelievably successful because both prefer staying alone. Helen loves privacy; thus, she spends less time with her husband. Benjamin is a busy man travelling from one country to another to manage the family's expansive estates. When Helen gets sick, Benjamin employs the most expensive doctors to care for her.
Helen Rask
Helen Rask is Benjamin's wife. Helen loves privacy and spends most of her time with close friends. Unfortunately, Helen becomes mentally ill after the stock market collapses. Helen's health becomes worse after she undergoes electroconvulsive therapy. Later, Helen develops a heart attack and dies.
Dr. Frahm
Dr. Frahm is the first medical practitioner to treat Helen when she becomes mentally ill. When Benjamin employs Dr. Frahm, he expects him to provide daily updates on his wife's progress. However, Benjamin discovers that Dr. Frahm is incompetent and replaces him with a new doctor.
Dr. Aftus
Dr. Aftus is the new practitioner who attends to Helen. Dr, Aftus gives Helen convulsion therapy, hoping her health will improve. Unfortunately, the therapy worsens Helen's health. Later, Helen dies of a heart attack.
Andrew Bevel
Andrew Bevel is a close friend of Benjamin and Helen. Bevel reveals that he played a major role in the 1929's Stock Market Crash. Bevel says that he worked closely with Benjamin and his wife. Unfortunately, their business operations failed to yield enough funds, leading to the stock market's collapse. Besides business, Bevel is a writer, and in his memoir, he talks about the good work of Helen. According to Bevel, Helen is a philanthropic woman looking forward to empowering the less fortunate.
Ida Partenza
Ida Partenza is Bevel's former employee. After several years, Partenza returns to Bevels Mansion and discovers it is now a museum. Partenza helps Bevel in writing his memoir. The memoir reflects on Bevel's early life, business operations and the lessons learnt about life.
