What is the significance of Lubitsch showing the crowd leaving the opera house while Colet is looking for her purse?
It could seem simply that the release of the people from the opera means that the show is over, but if we look deeper into Lubitsch's composition we can see far more. Lubitsch uses the crowd to emply a metaphor, that Colet is looking for her purse as if someone is looking for a needle in a haystack with the opera viewers being the hay and the purse being the needle.

Why is it ironic that Colet pays Monescu 20,000 francs for her purse?
Colet has lost her purse which is worth 125,000 francs. Monescu receiving any money for returning the purse is ironic because it was he that stole it from her in the first place, and has duped her into believing he is a upstanding citizen simply looking to do the right thing.
