Tonio Kroger Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Sunrise (Symbol)

Tonio has spent already few days in his hometown, and these days were dull, rainy and pretty dismal. But one day started with a very beautiful sunrise, Tonio was yet asleep, but the rays had waken him up. At that moment he did not know what was going on, but when looked out of the window he was simply astonished with the beauty of the morning sun. on this day he met Hans and Inge, who were married, and on this day Tonio came to the conclusion that real importance of art is in love. In this way the sunrise symbolizes new starts and kind of a lucid interval.

Music and dance (Motif)

The motif of music and dance can be seen through the entire story. Tonio’s mother is a great admirer of music and even plays piano herself, so from childhood Tonio is used to a refined taste in music. It is on the dance class when Tonio reveals his feelings to Inge, and also it is a ball when Tonio finds out that Inge and Hans are married and happy. Two people who Tonio loved when was a child, have found each other and became a happy couple. The motif gives overall a feeling of lyrics and inner beauty to the entire narrative.

Dialogues (Motif)

The author uses dialogue a lot in the given piece of literature; with the help of such exchanges, the reader finds more about the characters. But these are not simple dialogues, they are provoking, which in some way reminds famous dialogues of Socrates with his pupils.
