Miranda
Miranda is the story's protagonist, a twelve-year-old girl who relocates to an aged Victorian house with her mother and stepdad. Miranda is happy to move to Hard Scrabble, Massachusetts, because she enjoys exploring new places. Miranda is a curious girl who wants to understand everything happening around her. Miranda walks around to learn everything in their new house, and while in the attic, she comes across a very old dollhouse resembling the small town of Hard Scrabble.
Due to Miranda's inquisitiveness, she wants to know what is inside the dollhouse she has found. When she looks at the small windows of the dollhouse, Miranda gets the power to see the past and everything that happened centuries ago. The revelation Miranda sees answers her curiosity about the strange things happening in their new home. Miranda sees all the house's previous occupants from the 19th century to the present. Since Miranda wants to break the curse haunting the house, she frees the spirit of Abby from the dollhouse.
Josiah
Josiah is a haunted boy living in a Victorian house with his mother in the 1920s. Josiah lives in fear because his mother is abusive. From Miranda's revelations, the evil spirits in the house enter Josiah's mother, making her see her son as an enemy.
Abby
Abby is the trapped spirit in the dollhouse. Abby and her grandmother, Dorrie, lived in the Victorian house in the early 19th century. Dorrie is a witch, and she uses Abby as an intercessor with the spirits of her dead children. Unfortunately, one day, Dorrie's ritual backfires and the spirit of Abby refuses to leave the dollhouse. As a result, Dorrie dies mysteriously. Abby’s spirit continues to haunt the new occupants of the old Victorian house until Miranda frees her from the dollhouse.
Dorrie
Dorrie is Abby's grandmother, a witch who uses Abby as a communication intermediary with spirits. Dorrie is a haunted woman who dies puzzlingly after Abby's spirit is shut in the dollhouse.
Dan
Dan is Miranda's new friend, a spiritual boy who has a connection to the past. Dan can see the past events and reconnect with his ancestors. Dan lives in Hard Scrabble and can see the town's history starting in the 19th century. Dan helps Miranda to free the spirit of Abby from the dollhouse, which breaks the curse of the old Victorian house.
