Through the Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass Chess - Alice's progression across the board

Alice is a white pawn in the game. She first meets the Red Queen in the garden, which is her first move. Her second move is to the third square in the queen's line, and then to the fourth, via the railway. The next move happens when Alice meets the White King. Then she progresses to the fifth, sixth and seventh squares (shop and river, meeting Humpty Dumpty, and the forest). Then the White Knight takes the Red Knight in the battle over Alice. Alice is crowned when she reaches the eighth square, and meets the two other queens. Alice castles when she attends the feast and then wins when she takes the Red Queen and checkmates the King.

For a diagram of Alice's eleven-move victory, see pages 132-133 in The Annotated Alice.
