Family

The main message of the book is that of the importance of family, whether it is one based on blood or by friendship. Odie and the three orphans manage to make a makeshift family of sorts as they escape the orphanage. Their bond is strengthened by their shared trauma and past. On the other hand, despite never meeting her, Odie is determined to b reunited with his Aunt Julia as she is his only remaining family.

Child Abuse

The children initially escape the orphanage because of the mistreatment and cruelty that they face. Deciding that fleeing and being homeless is better than staying is telling of the cruelty they faced at the hands of those who are meant to protect them. On top of this, they are kidnapped by one-eyed Jack who treats them as slaves and makes them work on his orchard.

Love

Love is shown through various relationships between the characters and the people they meet on their journey. However, it is most predominantly shown through the brotherly love between Odie and Albert. The two would do anything to protect each other, even if they are at differences with how they wish to live their lives.
