Things We Didn't See Coming Irony

The irony of Dad

While driving his family to the countryside, Dad hits another vehicle in the opposite direction. Ironically, instead of stopping to check on the other car, Dad accelerates his pedal and never stops. The narrator and his mother are shocked by Dad's decision not to stop after causing an accident. Dad gives an excuse that he loves his family more than anyone else, which is why he never stopped.

The irony of Grandpa’s relocation to the city

After Grandpa lived with his wife in the rural area for several years, he relocated to a city that appreciates liberal ideas. The rural area believes in conservative ideologies that Grandpa does not want to practice anymore. Ironically, after Grandpa lives in the city for a few years, he regrets leaving the rural area. In the city, the air is polluted, and food is inadequate. Grandpa says that there is plenty of fresh air and farm produce in the rural area, unlike in the city, which is suffocating. At last, Grandpa decides to move with Granma and the narrator to the rural area. Accordingly, the reader finds it ironic that Grandpa is returning to the conservative ideologies he was trying to evade in the rural areas.

The irony of the grandparent’s death

The suicide of Grandpa and Grandma is a complete contrast to what the reader expects. After the narrator and his grandparents successfully pass through the barricades to their rural home, Grandpa and Grandma swallow all their pills simultaneously to kill themselves. The narrator finds it ironic that his grandparents decide to end their lives after arriving in the rural area they yearned for.
