What is the underlying message to the story?
The most important message of the story is the idea of not letting people take advantage of your kindness and generosity. Thidwick has such a big heart that he keeps silent about his true feelings and continues to let more animals ride on his antlers. However, because of their selfishness, he ends up being hunted by poachers. The fact that his generosity led him into danger is the last straw for Thidwick, and he shakes off his antlers and rejoins his original group of friends.

How is Thidwick presented as being big-hearted?
Thidwick shows his good nature when he agrees to give Bingle Bug a free ride on his antlers. However, Bingle Bug proceeds to let more animals ride along, and each animal invites another person. Despite all this, Thidwick does not protest and allows them to travel on his antlers. Even when they ruin his antlers and scratch at him, Thidwick continues to stay silent and carries on with his journey.

How is Thidwick contrasted with the other animals?
Thidwick is an ideal of how all beings should behave towards others. He is kind enough to offer a ride to the other animals, without complaint. However, the other animals have a very different personality to Thidwick in that they are the polar opposite. Instead of being grateful at the kindness he has shown, they abuse this generosity and take advantage of him.
