Soldiers
To provide narration for the film, Peter Jackson and his team mined interviews that WWI veterans did with the BBC in the 1960s. None of the soldiers, however, are identified.
Still, these soldiers are the heart and soul of this film. Throughout the film, they vividly tell their stories. The stories of how they lost friends to mustard gas or a stray bullet or gangrene. How they bonded with their enemies on a dreary Christmas day. They also discuss how they lived, what they ate, how they went to the bathroom, and how - and more importantly, why - they fought one of the most brutal, violent, and deadly wars man has ever fought.
Peter Jackson
Although he is neither shown nor heard in the film, Peter Jackson is a major character in the film. It was because of his passion for WWI that the film was made in the way that it was. It was also Jackson who shaped the narrative and picked out the images, videos, and audio of the film. He thus plays a major role in the film.
