The irony of the relationship between Thomsen and Hannah
Thomsen has a secret sexual affair with Hannah, the wife of Commander Doll. Thomsen knows his boss is ruthless and can kill at a slight provocation. Ironically, Thomsen forgets the impending danger ahead and decides to date the commander's wife secretly. No one in the commanding center believes Thomsen can dare do such a risky thing.
The irony of Szmul
When the camp's commander recruits Szmul to assassinate his wife, Szmul agrees to follow all instructions to the last minute. Doll wants to kill his wife, Hannah, because he discovers she is cheating. Ironically, Szmul changes his mind about killing Hannah, and instead, he decides to tell her the truth. Szmul tells Hanna that her husband has hired him to assassinate her.
The police in the concentration camps
The police officers guarding the Nazi concentration camp are expected to oversee the welfare of the detainees and ensure they are secure. Ironically, the guards do the contrary because they rape women and young Jewish girls in the camp. The guards are always keen to identify new girls and women in the concentration camps so that they can assault them sexually.
