The Woman in Black Character List

Arthur Kipps

Arthur Kipps is a protagonist of the horror novella. He is a solicitor who works for Mr. Bentley. Before the arrival to Crythin Gifford, he is a devoted father and a husband, who loves and holds in high esteem his own family. But the meeting with the woman in black at Eel Marsh House changes his life with horrible consequences. He is a very kind and sympathetic man and his desire to help families, whose children die, is increasing. Arthur’s courage forces him to struggle with the woman in black. He isn’t a coward, but unfortunately his kindness isn’t able to save his darling family. After all the nightmares of Eel Marsh House, he finds a new family, but his past doesn’t want to let him go.

The Woman in Black (also known as Jennet Humfrye)

The woman in black (also known as Jennet Humfrye) is surely an antagonist. She is a ghost who kills all young children of Crythin Gifford, and she takes vengeance on all happy parents for death of her son. Her ghost cannot accept the loss, because Jennet loved her son with all her heart. Actually, she is an evil force, one which destroys the peace and happiness because of her envy. Jennet was a kind woman, but conditions have changed her and she must take away lives of all innocent children.

Sam Daily

Sam Daily is an inhabitant of Crythin Gifford, who also has lost his son because of the woman in black. Initially, he doesn’t want to believe in ghost and help Arthur Kipps, but then he decides to save the other children of this town and get rid of the evil deeds of the woman in black. He is very sympathetic and clever; his gallantry and help show that he is a loyal friend and a responsible person.
