The Woman and the Ape Metaphors and Similes

The Woman and the Ape Metaphors and Similes

Adam

The metaphor of Adam has been used for the character of Adam in the novel. Unlike the biblical character Adam, who was the first man to live on this earth, the character in the novel loses his wife because of an animal. The writer has used this metaphor to represent all human beings. When Madelene rejects Adam, she actually rejects humans in general and prefers an ape over them. A contrast has also been drawn by the writer between the first man Adam and the Adam of twentieth century by employing this metaphor.

Animal

The simile of animal has been used for Madelene. The narrator says that 'she is animal like' which shows that she possesses the characteristics of animals. She bids farewell to the society and starts living a love life with an ape. Just like animals she doesn't want to be bound by the societal restrictions and wants to live a free life where she wouldn't be confined within the four walls.
