About the Author

In September 1916, Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, which is near the capital of Wales. He was raised by his single mother after his father died when he was young. When he was a child, he went to a boarding school and joined the Public Schools Exploring Society. Dahl’s first career was as a salesman for Shell Oil, and then, during World War II, he joined the Royal Air Force in Nairobi. His time in the military inspired some of his stories, including “An African Story.” In Libya, Dahl had to do a crash landing in the Libyan desert during the war and wrote Shot Down Over Libya afterwards.
